How to Completely Uninstall Mac Apps (No Leftovers)

Updated 2026-07-14 · 1 min read

Dragging an app to the Trash only deletes half of it. The real application leaves caches, preferences, launch agents and logs scattered across ~/Library — and over the years these leftovers can quietly eat tens of gigabytes of disk space.

This guide explains where leftovers hide, how to remove them by hand, and how to do it in one click.

Where do app leftovers hide?

When you install and use a Mac app, it typically writes files to these locations:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/<AppName> — documents, databases and downloaded resources
  • ~/Library/Caches/<bundle-id> — temporary caches, often the largest folder
  • ~/Library/Preferences/<bundle-id>.plist — your settings
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents — helpers that start at login
  • ~/Library/Containers and ~/Library/Group Containers — sandboxed app data
  • ~/Library/Logs/<AppName> — diagnostic logs

Before deleting anything under Containers, make sure the app has fully quit — otherwise macOS may immediately recreate the folder.

Uninstalling by hand, step by step

  1. Quit the app completely. Check the Dock and the menu bar; use Activity Monitor if you are not sure.
  2. Move the app to the Trash from the /Applications folder.
  3. Find the bundle identifier. Most leftovers are named after it, e.g. com.example.app.
  4. Search each location above and remove folders matching the app name or bundle ID.
  5. Empty the Trash and restart if the app installed launch agents.

Doing this for every app is tedious — and one wrong delete inside ~/Library can break another app's settings.

Or let a tool do it

An uninstaller scans all of the locations above automatically, shows you every associated file with its size, and lets you preview before anything is removed. That is exactly what SuperCleanerPro's App Uninstaller does — drag an app in, review the leftovers, click once, done.
